Mila Medina

Lake Geneva and Beyond:
Swiss Landscapes and Portraits

January 13-March 4, 2012
Opening Reception, January 13, 7-9pm

Mila Medina's exhibit explores many of Switzerland’s most scenic places, including the city of Lausanne, the vineyards and small mountain villages above Lake Geneva, and the highest peaks of the Zermatt Alps, including the Matterhorn. Taken during her three years of travel in the country (2008–2011), the approximately twenty-five photographs assembled at Caramel display remarkable depth, clarity, and compositional style, capturing simultaneously the grandeur of Switzerland’s remarkable scenery and the unique textures of light, shadow, stone, and season that comprise each panorama. At the center of many of these works, one finds a rare quietude that grows ever more elusive in the ordinary rush of our daily lives.

A native of Moscow, Russia, Mila Medina emigrated to the U.S. in 1999.

Don’t miss out on this joint opening the same night, January 13, with the Healing Arts Gallery on U Street.

Art @ Work: Make sure to head to the Healing Arts Gallery across the street for the opening of Art @ Work as well. Art @ Work is a collaboration between the Smith Center and Albus Cavus, an art group that seeks to transform communities through public art projects. During the run of the exhibition, Albus Cavus' team of artists will work with community members to create onsite murals. The ongoing collaboration will culminate in the unveiling of the final mural on February 17. Join us for the launch of this valuable community-driven project.
